Gu Cheng...

Growing up as a kid, I was always exposed to Penang culture and food. Every year, I will head back to Malaysia with my family to visit my grandmother as well as to satisfy our cravings for Penang food, especially Penang Assam Laksa which we can hardly find in Singapore.

Situated at Crawford Lane (beside Tolido's Espresso Nook), Gu Cheng is a new and unpretentious restaurant that serves a decent range of authentic Penang cuisine at an extremely reasonable price. Nothing beyond $8 and prices are all in nett! They have also recently rolled out a special set lunch menu for the office crowd where you get to enjoy a side dish, a signature dish and a drink for only $9.90! So damn value-for-money lah! What are you waiting for? Jot this place down on your phone now!

Still in disbelief that these mouth-watering Penang dishes at Gu Cheng are so affordable! Definitely a place where you can order lots of food to share with your family or friends without having to spend a bomb!

Rose Tea // $2
Singapore’s getting unbelievably hot these days! The Rose Tea was very refreshing, with a strong floral taste which was a life-saver on a hot sunny afternoon. Definitely a good and healthy option to quench your thirst!

Penang Lor Bak // $3.50
The nonya was heavily spiced, flavourful and very crispy. It wasn’t very oily and they were very generous with the fillings. No condiments were required for this! This is a must-try!

Crispy Tofu // $4.90
Simple as it may looks, these crispy tofu was very pleasurable to the taste buds. Hidden within the crispy tofu lies a generous servings of well-mixed tender pork and seafood fillings which had a really nice texture. Dip it into the special sauce to achieve maximum pleasure. I can easily finish this on my own!

Penang Laksa // $6.90
This Penang Laksa was robust and flavourful. It was a good combination of sweet, sour and spicy. I thought the sliced pineapples brought a refreshing flavour to the laksa which I really liked. By the way, the bits of Malaysian fish was also really addictive!

P/s: Mixed everything together before you start indulging in the Penang Laksa!

Penang Hokkien Mee // $6.90
This Penang Hokkien Mee was very similar to our Singapore’s Prawn Noodle but with a milder prawn flavour. The soup was clean, sweet with a subtle prawn flavour that hits at the end. I wished the soup was more robust with a slightly stronger prawn flavour in it. But you know what, some people like a cleaner and milder version of Prawn Noodle and this is it!

Signature Carrot Cake // $6.90
This was the first time I see carrot cake being prepared and cooked in this manner! It was legit addictive and delicious! It was very aromatic and flavourful. The egg bits were soft, fluffy and well-spiced. The carrot cake was well-seasoned with a slight crispiness at the burnt parts. Highly recommended! Very tempted to order one for take-away!
